Did you know that The Art of Painting stayed in Vermeer’s family long after his death? It wasn’t sold until years later, when Adolf Hitler himself purchased the painting during World War II. After the purchase, the painting was hidden in a salt mine in Austria to protect it from air raids. Luckily, it survived the war and now resides safely in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
